The challenges
we face together
Changing land use patterns
If current development trends continue,
and there is no reason to think they won’t, the entire area
between Grand Rapids, Muskegon and Holland will become a single megalopolis
by 2025. Given this rapid rate of urbanization, it is critical that
a green infrastructure be factored into all regional planning efforts.
Having this infrastructure in place prior to mass urbanization is
the only way to ensure that development does not outpace the desire
to create livable communities.
Tourism
Michigan’s $12 billion tourism
industry is second only to the state’s automobile industry.
The trailways of Michigan are a vital component to the health and
growth of this important source of revenue. By becoming a national
leader in the development of trailways, Michigan can be assured that
its network of trailways will become a preferred destination for visitors
from around the country and throughout the world.
Family health and well being
The Trails and Greenways Coalition
is an active partner with preventative health efforts underway for
residents in all of the counties served by these regional trailways.
Trailways help people become healthier and more fit by integrating
physical activity into their daily routines. Trail groups are already
organizing year-around activities and special events to take advantage
of the health benefits trailways have to offer. And the Coalition
is currently seeking other community health advocates to join with
existing partners like the Michigan Medical Society, Healthy Kent
2010, the Mecosta County Medical Center, the Tri-County Medical Society,
and the Oceana County District Health Department to help promote the
benefits of healthy living.
